Every Ray of Light

I use photography to help myself see the light each day. Nothing necessarily unordinary. But to do so helps me to love better and therefore live better. Let me explain a bit.

I love this quote from The Brothers Karamazov:

“Love all God’s creation, the whole and every grain of sand in it. Love every leaf, every ray of God’s light. Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day and you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love.”

That’s kind of my goal recently. Terrance Malick adapted the ethos of this quote in my favorite movie, “The Tree of Life,” as this:

“Help each other. Love everyone. Every leaf. Every ray of light.”

And as I go about my days, I’ve been trying to do that more fully, more intentionally.

There’s another line in “The Tree of Life” that stands out to me which I deeply believe these days:

“The only way to be happy is to love. Unless you love, your life will flash by.”

So I choose to love every leaf. Every ray of light. It teaches me how to help others and love everyone.
