Some days

Some days I notice the air around me feeling more electrified. Everything feels more energized and filled with meaning somehow.

I don’t mean to sound too woo-woo about it all, but I believe that we are all connected, that everything, in fact, is connected. I believe this to always be true, that everything is stitched together with an almost-but-not-quite-invisible thread. There are some moments when the light hits just right and we get a shimmer of this connectedness. Sometimes we call it coincidence.

Often when we experience coincidences, we’ll credit them to the “universe.” But the universe is mostly empty and it’s very cold. It doesn’t care about us at all.

These days when I experience coincidences I find myself saying, “of course!” Yeah, of course a friend brought up a song that I looked up and listened to for the first time in years. Of course I feel a twinge of pain shoot through my body when my son shows me his busted lip from recess or a girl in my home shows me a cut on her arm. Of course I ran into a friend at the store I mentioned to my wife earlier in the day. Of course while feeling emotional the last couple days, one of my friends shares they lost their pregnancy.

Of course we are connected. To resist this mystery is to fracture one of the most beautiful gifts of our human existence.
